Search is a small application that uses the Indexing Service provided with Microsoft Windows
(Windows 2000 and later). Search is free.
Search allows you to quickly find files. Examples:
| You enter | Search lists |
| silver gold | Files containing silver and gold. |
| silver or gold | Files containing silver or gold. |
| silver gold *.txt *.doc | Files (.txt or .doc) containing silver and gold. |
| silver gold -6w | Files modified in the last 6 weeks containing silver and gold. |
You can copy the list of
file details (paste it into Excel or Notepad).
Open a file with a
double-click, or select an action from the right-click menu.
You can
customise the menu, for example, so you could press N to open a file
in Notepad, or press V to open it in Vim (or any editor you
prefer).
Before running Search, you need to start the Indexing Service, and you need to leave the computer idle for several hours to allow it to index files. After installing Search, see file Search.txt for more information.
You also need MDAC installed (Microsoft Data Access Components Windows 2000 and later should have it).
To install Search, download and run file Search.msi.
If interested, you can also download the source code for Search
(Visual Basic 6.0).
| Item | File | Click |
| Search 1.0 Setup | Search.msi (2MB) | Download |
| Search 1.0 Source (VB6) | SearchSource.zip (53KB) | Download |
