you should now receive an email at email
which will have a webbug that logs your viewing the email
In that email at the very top is an invisible .gif which is what makes outlook give up your information. You need do nothing but preview or read the email to exploit yourself, there is nothing you have to click on.
Once you get the email, wait for a minute or two for my logs to catch it and add it to the database then click here and again tell it the email address you tested. It will identify you by your email address and show you the date, time, and IP address from which the email was read.
Note, it's real important that you realize what it means to be identified from my logs by your email address. It is this capability that allows a spammer to know which email addresses are active and to automate the process of validating them with every spamming.
You can send your friends emails this way and then go to that page to see when they read the email. It is in no way connected to your viewing these pages here, this is your email program allowing you to get logged reading the email and revealing your email address to the server. Spammers do it to you every day. It lets them know you got their spam and that your email address is active.
Lots of people including Steve Gibson of www.grc.com and Richard Smith of the Privacy Foundation have written about these little devils however these are emailbugs which are more dangerous because anyone can send you email and all you need to do is preview or open the email for this exploit to work. I know Outlook and Outlook Express are vulnerable, there are probably others but most email programs like Eudora have already put in a switch to disable this nasty feature. There is no easy way to disable this in Outlook or OE unless you go offline to read your email or block it in your firewall like I do, however one little mistake like I made and you are exposed.
I want MS to fix this, if you feel the same way, please tell them so. Maybe if enough of us complain they will do something about this. I happen to like OE and I'd like to see it be a little more secure.
Ok I read the email, Show me my email address being logged
