The HP5L printer has an automatic powerdown feature. With NT4, W2K and XP sometimes the printer stays on all the time. The reason for this is because bidirectional printing is enabled.
To disable this feature, open the printer properties and uncheck the bidirectional printing checkbox in the port configuration window.
